History

The Mole Valley Railway was started in March 2004. The theme of the railway was always going to be a narrow-gauge railroad in Colorado and Southwest because of the locomotives, rolling stock and buildings in hand when we moved from Virginia. Construction began in summer of 2004 with the paver patio and concrete block wall built by yours truly. The dirt fill and back-side rock/granite walls were mostly completed by the end of the year thanks to the generosity and cooperation of the site-preparation company working on the new homes adjacent to our lot.

Construction continued unabated for 18 months until we had to stabilize the creek banks because of serious erosion caused by heavy rains during the winter. This turned out to be an expensive godsend because with the creek banks stabilized we were able to plan the bridge construction across the creek to an area on the upper (house) side of the creek.

Once the mainline was up and running, we decided to create an Alpine village above the main track on the house side of the creek. This is our version of Helen, GA. In 2007 we had to take down two poplar trees next to Helen which meant that half the track was taken up and re-laid afterwards. The removal of these trees allowed great improvement to the Helen area.
